Edible Handpainted Cookies ~ Part Three

Photobucket

These are always so much fun to make ~ I just did a few for my party yesterday. Since it was a "Bird" theme, I chose the birdhouse cookie cutter shapes and went with a "semi" winter theme.

You do not have to be an artist to paint these, or plan them out ahead. I usually just think of a general theme, occasion, or season and go from there.

Traditional colors of the season.

Really, anything goes.

I've made these for many years and have always used ordinary liquid food color but this time I also experimented with the gel food coloring (in the baking/cake decorating section of the grocery store), and it works great especially for deeper color saturation.

This time I also experimented with applying detail using food color pens, like THESE to add more detail; they work pretty well.

They really are a lot of fun to play around with, and are completely edible.

  17. Beautiful!! Can I ask you a couple of questions?

#1-can you give me your royal icing recipe ASAP
#2-do you paint on the cookies when the bottom royal icing is wet or dry?
#3-Does white food coloring work on dark colored royal icing?
Please respond to me on my blog or at treasurepayne@hotmail.com I would greatly appreciate it!

  18. Hi Trez, Thanks for your comment and inquiry.

In the OLD days I would use the traditional Royal Icing recipe using fresh raw egg whites. Now I use the canned/powdered egg whites (or Royal Icing Egg White Mix) following the directions on the package.

Dip the cookies into the liquid royal icing and allow to dry completely, then paint/decorate as you like.

I've never painted on a dark background so I'm not sure how that would work.

Have fun, thanks for stopping by and thank you for your comments.
