Little Changes~ Making it a Bit Healthier :)

So you pick up a little carton of fruit yogurt thinking it's a healthy choice.
Yeow! Have you ever checked the ingredient list?

I don't have a huge craving for sweets, but ONE of us does. *grin*

"We" are learning to rein in "our" sweet tooth ~ little by little. I'm not crazy about the use of artificial sweeteners, but recognize that a product such as Splenda can help with the changes we are making.

If you are trying to cut back on sugar consumption and have a difficult time finding low-sugar, unsweetened fruit yogurt ~ I have a tip which is a good substitute for sugar-loaded fruit yogurts.

I always have a large carton of Non-Fat Plain Yogurt on hand (preferably organic, with no artificial additives). While I don't mind having my fruit with the plain yogurt ~ some can't tolerate the tart flavor. You can sweeten it up a bit to make it more palatable by stirring a little unsweetened Fruit Spread, or Sugar Free Preserves into the plain yogurt to taste. It's a fairly healthy alternative to other commercial fruit yogurts.

These are also delicious for a light lunch, or a healthful dessert for a special occasion. :)

We'll gradually tame the sweet tooth, and maybe one day we can skip the sugar-free stuff altogether. That's my hope. :)

    I also like to use agave syrup in my plain Greek Yogurt with a few berries...just a drop and it makes the world of difference....

  2. Looks so pretty, Mari and so healthy! I like unsweetened yogurt with sliced bananas... the sweetness of the bananas is just enough for me.

  3. Have you tried the Greek yogurt "Fage" that is zero fat, and virtually no sugar? puree some fruit with it and it is sooooo yummy. I do put a tiny bit of honey in it sometimes. I also found a recipe for a frozen yogurt recipe for the "Fage" I can't wait to make it. I'll need this after all our eating adventures in France!

    there's some debate as to the safety of splenda too but I use this most of the time - I'm not a "I can limit my sugar and not want it" kind of person - its all or nothing for me...and reducing my carbs helps with sugar cravings too. ( I was low carb and no sugar for 4 years before getting pregnant and need to go back to that, my body does best on that regime) I've found truvia is really good for drinks (coffee) and such, I haven't found a stevia I can tolerate yet.

  5. I have been eating yogurt with fruit and a little granoloa (lowfat) everyday the last week. I even had it for dinner last night! It is so yummy, especially with the fresh raspberries. I'm trying to lose the weight I put on while injured and unable to exercise!

  6. When I was a kid, my mother got into making homemade yogurt for a while. To sweeten it, we would add a little jam or sweetened fresh fruit. I don't know why I don't do that now! I usually buy the non-fat/sugar-free yogurt, but plain non-fat yogurt with a low-sugar or sugar-free fruit spread would taste so much better! Love your photos and the decision to eat healthier. I'm going to try to get on board!! :D

  7. Try FAGE total--the full fat stuff. It's healthful natural dairy fat if you don't eat it with sugar! The fat content mellows out the tartness. Sweeten it it to taste with a good tasting stevia extract, or even Splenda if you're into that.

    Sugar-free preserves sound like a great addition to yogurt! Thanks for the tip. :)
