Rainy Day Hand Painted Cookies

I've posted about handpainted cookies several times before, but I hadn't made them for quite a while.
It's a fun activity ...

I've been making them for years and years, just for fun. I love the creative outlet and the fact that there are no rules ~ just let your imagination guide you. :D

I don't plan what I'm going to paint, but I usually choose cookie cutters that have something to do with the season, or the event; birthdays, holidays, baby showers, etc.

The dough is just a simple roll & cut-out sugar cookie recipe. After they are cool dip or paint them with Royal Icing and allow to dry.

This time I used a different Royal Icing (which I wasn't very pleased with), it doesn't have the semi-gloss sheen that traditional Royal Icing does. You can see the difference if you compare these to other cookies I've shared before. (Links below.)

When I first began making these I used raw egg whites for the Royal Icing (I told you it was YEARS ago.) :)
But now I always use canned powder egg whites, also called powdered meringue. You can find it in most grocery stores on the baking aisle. Wilton makes a version, too.

The "paint" is simply food coloring; any kind ~ liquid or gel and applied with an artists paint brush. Dilute the food coloring with water to adjust the intensity of the shade your want. For the fine details you can use food-safe decorating pens, available in some craft stores in the cake/cookie accessory aisle or from baking supply stores on the internet.

If you think you might like to make these, I really encourage you to try them ~ they are fun to make.

Here are some examples of some that I have shared in the past:

Thank you for stopping by today for a visit!
I hope you have a wonderful week.

  3. Those are too cute to eat. . .I love sugar cookies, they are a weakness, I may have to try your painted cookies this year for Valentines Day. I'm afraid my art abilities are not as honed as yours though! Thanks for sharing.

  4. Beautiful! It takes an artist to do these. They are lovely and would be wonderful for any special occasion...like rain. (That is an occasion in my area!)

My cookies could never compare to yours. They are a work of art!

  7. These really are works of art - both the cookies and the photos. The little blue and white umbrellas in the blue and white dish make a stunning presentation.

  8. They are perfect. I think this is only fun if you have a bit of talent. I make great sugar cookies...but, if I try to make the frosting decorative (instead of just a solid color) I am no longer having fun...I am frustrated! I've done many times when my kids were younger...believe me, they never looked like yours!

I love that you've posted photos of your new cookies! I know i've told you before, but after discovering your previous posts on hand-painted cookies, they've become a mainstay over at Deer Park!

  22. Oh these are so pretty. If you could have seen the mess I made on some sugar cookies for Christmas.
I almost adopted some 5 year olds so I could lie and say that the kids made them.
It never occurred to me to use paint brushes. I am a tole painter so I could have come up with something better than the odd ones I ended up with.

  25. Thank you so much everybody ~ your sweet words make my day. :)

Oh truly, I don't have a steady hand ~ you can do these!

Rena, for the Royal Icing I aim for a consistency that is similar to crepe batter (thinner than pancake batter.) Then dip them face down in the icing and allow to dry and harden on cooling racks.

Melissa, hi! I'm glad you're still making them and that they have become a signature cookie at Deer Park Farms.

Thank you again everyone for taking the time to leave a comment, it is very kind of you. If they look like fun to you, I hope you give them a try!

  29. Mari, these are absolutely spectacular. Your creative artistry is suburb!

Some will say they are too beautiful to eat, but that would only be a waste of your enjoyment not to see them enjoyed.

You should start a mail-order business and sell them by the dozen. Who would not want to recieve these cookies as a gift.

  30. These are lovely! I've never seen or eaten hand-painted cookies before--thanks for the introduction!

  33. I consider myself to have a lot of patience, but for some reason, when it comes to cookie decorating, I just don't have it :( I wish I did, so that I could make super cool cookies like yours! My daughter and I set out to do some fancy cookie decorating a few years back, and it ended in disaster, and us laughing for hours at our ugly cookies! oh well.

  34. These are so beautiful - they'd be perfect for a baby shower. Love the colors you chose and the detail!

  37. These are beautiful, as is your blog. I look forward to trying them. How thick do you suppose you roll the dough out? My recipe says 1/8" but yours appear much thicker with nice straight sides.

  38. well, i am tuning in at the MOST appropriate time, i am knee deep in hail, thunder, lighting and torrential downpours... your cookies are the serenity in my nightmare...

could you paint the sun next please? and a pot of gold, size 2, in tahitti, young and brilliant while you are at it...

  39. You are quite the artist! I don't think I have the skill, nor the patience to do that detailed decorating by hand, but I'm glad you do because they are beautiful to look at!

  40. It's fun if you can paint, and I cannot. These are very fancy and fun, but maybe not so practical for the average Jane.

  41. Mary, could those cookies be more perfect. The detail is so exact. Really, truly works of art.

  44. Mari- These are the most artistic and beautiful cookies I have ever seen! Oh, I would love to make these. I am having a valentines tea party for some of my friends and I think I might have to make these.

Do you perfer regular food coloring or gel?
    Thanks for this wonderful post.
    Yvonne

  45. Thank you! Your kind words make my heart sing. :)

Hi Yvonne, when I first began making these gel wasn't available so I always used liquid ~ for more intense color I would use it without diluting. But recently I've been using the gel ~ more vibrant colors are possible, and you can just add water for a more subtle effect. Valentine cookies would be perfect ~ If you decide to do it, I can't wait to see your cookies!

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to comment. xo
