Mini Caramel Apples

Oh, how I wanted to love these little Mini Caramel Apples.

I found the idea from a magazine a couple of years ago; I think it was "Family Fun" magazine.

They WERE fun to make...

Just melt some candy caramels ~

And use a melon-ball scoop to cut apple balls from the apple, leaving a bit of green peel on each.

Stick a small pretzel stick in the center of the green peel and dip into the melted caramel, and allow them to "set up" on waxed paper or a silicone baking liner. You could roll them in finely chopped nuts if desired...

But don't bother.

In fact, I suggest you don't even bother making them.

Shortly after dipping them-- the lovely caramel slid slowly off the little "apples" into a sticky, liquid pool on the plate.
Not pretty. :0(

In anticipation that this might happen I had actually blotted the apple rounds with a paper towel to absorb some of their juice just before dipping them.  Pffft.

Forget it.  Next time I'll just core and cut the apple in wedges and let everyone dip their own into the warm caramel.

Once again, sometimes the simple way is the best way. ;0)

I hope you don't mind that I shared this kitchen-flop with you~ but I thought you should know.

  2. Flops do happen, more so with me when it comes to making sweets! They make for a beautiful picture though. I wonder if the magazine has a test kitchen?

  3. What a shame! They are adorable. My grand-daughter would have loved that idea. Well, this sometimes happens and I always appreciate honesty, so thank you. xoxo Pattie

  4. So good to know!!! I had seen this recipe and thought it looked so cute! Now I know "the rest of the story."

BUT, I'm thinking the idea might still be salvaged with a different approach. What about dipping the apples in peanut butter and then in melted chocolate? I imagine the chocolate would set around the peanut butter just fine. It's a bit of a different approach (and not caramel), but I wonder if it would work. - www.delightfulcountrycookin.com

  10. I posted my last comment after just looking at the cute pics, but I'm back again after actually reading what you had to say - I bet these would have worked better with a dry apple variety, maybe galas? Just a thought.

  11. Well that's too bad...they are so cute. I guess it does make sense that all that moisture would mess with the caramel. I sort of like to read about flops sometimes. There are times when I think life in Blogland appears "too perfect" and we all know it isn't!

I'm going to make caramel apples in a couple of weeks, but I might try to figure out how to make the caramel stick... I just love these little bites!
    You always inspire me!!!!!!

  17. So cute, I hate that when that happens. I don't think they should publish recipes that don't work. They must have known that would happen. Glad you told us though cuz I thought they were adorable.

  22. I love caramel apples! I'm sorry these didn't work out... they are very cute (pre-caramel-slippage, anyway). But you're right - simple is often the best. I'll take some apples wedges and a little bowl of warm caramel and be very happy!!

  24. Such a shame, Mari.. the idea was just great!! And it looks soooooooooo.. hmm..

Maybe you can melt some sugar, and stir some butter through it so it won't be too hard? Don't know, just a thought.. Love the idea, so I'm gonna give it a try over here anyway!! ;P

  25. What a shame...it's very frustrating to go to all that work, just to have the recipe fail in th end. The photos are gorgeous, though.
