Oasis Naan

Please raise your hand if you have a passion for collecting cookbooks.
Oh yes! I am a longtime cookbook collector ~ though I've slowed on my collecting for two reasons: I've exhausted places to properly store the books, plus with the internet we have instant access to almost any recipe one might want.

But still, I love to page through cookbooks and I actually do still cook from them. I find it relaxing to read from my cookbook collection for inspiration. I came across this recipe for Scallion and Caraway (or Cumin) flat bread from "Baking with Julia" written by Dorie Greenspan, it made the perfect vehicle for egg salad lunch on a leisurely weekend.

I tweaked the recipe a bit, using stone ground whole wheat flour for the all-purpose white flour (keeping our healthier diet in mind.)

It is fragrant and irresistible fresh from the oven ~ fabulous eaten warm, and best enjoyed the same day ~ which is exactly what I did. ;)

Delicious plain and hand torn into wedges, or slathered with a favorite spread; Hummus, Baba Ganoush (Baba Ghannouj/Baba Ghannoug), or in this case egg salad with chives from the garden.

Like my mom, I'm pretty particular about my egg salad (or Deviled Egg salad as Mom called it.) The big chunks of hard-cooked eggs in typical egg salads just don't do it for me.

I prefer my egg salad finely textured.
A quickie tip... Use a waffle-type potato masher to make quick work of the task. I still have my original (one similar to the one below) since I was first married (almost 40 years ago!) I've tried all different tools to make egg salad the texture I like, but this remains my favorite. (Of course it is a top-notch potato masher, and is my favorite tool for guacamole, too.)

I couldn't help but share at least one blossom ~ the fragrant peonies put on an incredible show in the garden this year ~ but their season here is short so we treasure them while we can.
If you would like the recipe for Oasis Naan, and the accompanying recipe for Persian Naan are available on my Once Upon a Plate Recipe blog. (Click to link.)

If you try either of the bread recipes I hope you enjoy them.
Thank you for stopping by!

  2. It appears my hand is the first to go up as an avid cookbook collector. For years I have enjoyed gathering military wives cookbooks with our frequent moves and church cookbooks as well. Now thanks to bloggers and my new thrifting hobby, I am finding really nice cookbooks for some pocket change!

Your pictures are so tempting. I will check out your egg salad and bread for sure.

  3. I have an obsession with cookbooks. :) It started a couple of years ago and I have been powerless to stop it since. I have more than I know what to do with, but that won't stop me from adding to my collection. I love reading through them and seeing the different ways people do things. At least I'm not hooked on something really bad for me. LOL

  7. The Encyclopedia Britannica (was I the only one left with a set?) was given away to make way for more cookbooks on the shelves! Even with the wealth on the internet, I still like the feel of a book in my hands.
The bread and egg salad look yummy!

  9. We're preparing for a move and my husband is already groaning at the prospect of moving my books! And I always use the same masher for egg salad- it works beautifully to break up almond paste too!

  13. Yes, I am an avid cookbook collector! I read them like novels. I've told my kids, do *not* just get rid of the cookbooks when I'm gone - it's a fabulous collection that needs to be handed down (luckily, they both love to cook) o:)

  17. Those look insanely yummy!!

My cookbook stash continues to grow! I'm running out of room as well. I just ordered a new baking cookbook, from the author of "Cake Bible," it is called "Rose's Heavenly Cakes." I can't wait to get it.

  18. These sound good - I've never had naan! Aren't peonies just gorgeous? Mine are all abloom... I go out to the garden and just stand by them, smelling them and staring at them! I'd love to cut some to bring indoors, but they are covered in ants!

  19. Much as I love the naan, I am transfixed by the lovely peonies. Mine bloomed in May and I just adore cutting bouquets of them for the hosue.

  22. I am a cookbookaholic! I read them as if they were novels and even though recipes on the internet are so easily accesible, I like the feel of a book in my hands. I know what you mean about running out of storage. I too use my waffle potato masher to make egg salad and have had the same one since I was 18. I love it. It is definitely a very versatile tool.

  23. Okay, I'm raising my hand up high. I've collected a lot of cookbooks, too. I used to be in a cookbook club, The Good Cook, I think it was. They'd send a cookbook monthly. I covered my cookbooks in the same wrapping paper and displayed them on top of my kitchen cabinets. That naan recipe looks delicious.

    All the Best,

    Requi

  24. Guilty as charged. I've raised my hand. There's just something about holding a cookbook rather than seeing the recipe on the internet that has my attention.

Beautiful bread and egg salad. Lovely pink peony too. I have a very similar masher that I use. Great minds, oui?

  25. Raising my hand!!! I love to read cookbooks. Doesn't mean I cook the recipes, but a girl can dream, can't she??? ;-)

Love your recipe AND your beautiful peony, Mary!

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  26. Mari, I think I just spelled your name wrong! Now, you KNOW I know how to spell it. I have become the typo queen of late. LOL! Sorryl...

  27. That looks so delicious! Yes, we are cookbook collectors. We say that we are not going to buy any more, but then we find another that we can't pass up. We love pulling them out and looking through them...there is something about flipping the pages and holding a book that the internet doesn't give!

  28. A "passion" for collecting cookbooks, you call it? My husband calls it a crazy obsession! But my hand is most definitely raised! And these naan are perfect! I love this lunch.
